Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a spoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the impact of this epic fail.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so awful that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer extent of chaos and just gives up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping strategy.
But then, you remember that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of confusion. You start ruminating about the purpose of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The volcanic eruption struck with devastating force, destroying entire towns in its sweep. Buildings crumbled like fragile toys, and the screams that ensued was deafening. Thousands were left beneath wreckage, their fate unknown. The severity of the disaster was unprecedented, leaving survivors to confront a future forever changed.

Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't make it to look decent. As I was running out the door, I fell and gracefully all over myself. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for work.
I arrived. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. Everything. I stay awake.
By the time I got home, I was utterly defeated. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in read more a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
